Question by Bret: How can I be sure to get 100% on my bass exam?
I’m doing grade 8 bass guitar at the end of this year and I want to do really well. What do I have to do to get really good marks, like 90+ or even 100% and what song/bassline could I play for the specialism?
By the way it’s the London College of Music examination but it also says the Registry of Guitar tutors if that helps. Thanks icon smile How can I be sure to get 100% on my bass exam?

If you are selecting a piece, make sure it is appropriate. Before I went to Berkley, I made sure to comb over what I wanted to play to its relevence of the department I was joining (Jazz). Now, I chose a piece that would display what I could play within my limits but showcase my abilities.

Bass guitar, if fretted, you could do some jazz, funk (slap bass might get you points) or even rock if you find a proper bassline (Sting would play bass in odd time signatures which I’m sure would get you extra points).

They KEY, however, is once you find that piece (don’t pine over it) is to practice practice until you hate it, can play it backwards, and then practice it some more. There really is no shortcut except what we call “the woodshed” which is basically practicing. Pick your piece, and the longer you spend in “the woodshed” with it, the better, more accurate, smoother, and faster you will be able to play it.
