Question by Thomas: Is it okay to have short scale strings on my long scale bass?
I have a long scale bass but I bought short scale strings on accident. They’re long enough but I don’t know if it’s okay. The fabric wrap (whatever it’s called) goes out on to the neck and i’m not sure it’s supposed to do that. Do I need to get different strings or will it be okay?

THey’re only going to work if you can get a couple of full turns around each tuning peg. Less than that and you’re going to get constant slippage and problems staying in tune. THere should be nothing but metal against the nut or the bridge saddles – if the wrapping is touching either of those things it’s going to muffle the open string. If at the nut end it could even crack the nut – trying to force something thicker than the nut slot is filed. You can get rid of that wrap with a razor blade, but I think you’re better off just taking them back and getting the right thing.

You need different strings. Short scale strings are made for lower tension than long scale. The strings will never work right and may unwind or break. Chalk it up to experience and buy the right strings.
BTW – The fabric wrap is called the silk.
