Q&A: What are some awesome double bass pieces?
Question by Sarah: What are some awesome double bass pieces?
At the beginning of this school year, I picked up the double bass and started with some lessons every week. For my music theory recital, I want to play a song with the bass; I also want to sing while playing..I sing alto, (so no really high notes!) and I would prefer a jazz, swing, or musical theater genre. Any suggestions would be helpful!

Espranza Spalding is a grammy-award-winning jazz singer and female bassist. You should seek out some of her material for ideas.
The most awesome double-bass pieces I have heard lately are by a Frenchman, Renaud Garcia-Fons, who plays 5-string double-bass and has spectacularly amazing arco technique! His “Oriental Bass” and many other cuts are available on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=endscreen&v=8RG0eRHCTNw

I was actually going to suggest you listen to Slam Stewart who was a singer and string player. He used to sing along and harmonize with his bass when he played.

Don’t know if this is something you’d be interested in but I love it.
I’m particularly found of duet with Major Holley on “Tomorrow”.
