Steer clear of fender. expensive and not that gr8. I started with a samick. Simple, cheap and well made. Yamaha is also fantastic.

I didn’t go the cheap route when I bought my bass years ago.
First one I ever owned was a Washburn XB120. She still sounds awesome afer years of use. :)
Came with a hard case and was close to 300 after taxes. But that was like 8 years ago now too.
She cost a bit more than a starter, but it was so worth the extra money.

you can buy a good starter bass for about $ 150

(no amp, or case) i have personally had to play Thur a PA and its ok, but you’re definitely better off w/ an amp. (its very easy to blow the horns in PA cabinets running a bass thru it).

good names to look for:
squire, ibanez, epiphone, amongst hundreds of others.
plan on spending about $ 300 to for a decent start up, set up.
there are great amps and basses out there. i play a fender precision (so named b/c it was the 1st mass produced bass w/ frets) and is the industry standard. you can get a squire P for about $ 150.
