GHS Endorser, Dave Pomery, sits down to chat about the GHS Bass Boomers Series. Bass Boomers – Roundwound Nickel-Plated Steel The classic Power String. One of the most popular bass strings in the world. Extra core strength provides durability. The nickel plating babies your frets. Magnetically active ” Alloy 52″ slightly flattened in the winding process to provide a bright, great feeeling string with less finger noise. See all of our Bass Strings at www.ghsstrings.com
About The Band: The group’s name is derived from leftist politics; “Country Joe” was a popular name for Joseph Stalin in the 1940s, while “the fish” refers to Mao Tse Dung’s statement that the true revolutionary must “swim among the people as a fish.” The group began with the nucleus of “Country Joe” McDonald (lead vocals) and Barry “The Fish” Melton (lead guitar), recording and performing for the “Teach-In” protests against the Vietnam War in 1965. Co-founders McDonald and Melton added musicians as needed over the life of the band. By 1967, the group included Gary “Chicken” Hirsh (drums) (born in 1940, in Chicago, Illinois); David Cohen (keyboards) (born 8 April 1942, in Brooklyn, New York) and Bruce Barthol (bass) (born 11 November 1947 in Berkeley, California). The 1967 lineup lasted only two years, and by the 1969 music festival Woodstock, the lineup included Greg ‘Duke’ Dewey (drums), Mark Kapner (keyboards) and Doug Metzler (bass). The band came to perform an early example of psychedelic music. The LP “Electric Music for the Mind and Body” was very influential on early FM Radio in 1967. Long sets of psychedelic tunes like “Section 43″, “Bass Strings”, “Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine”, “Janis” (for and about Janis Joplin) and “Grace” (for singer Grace Slick) (all released on Vanguard Records) were often played back to back on KSAN and KMPX in San Francisco and progressive rock stations around the country. Their first album charted at #39 on September 23, 1967, their

The best string for that style would be Bass Boomers, ML3045 or M3045 sets. Thanks for playing GHS!

I think it’s awesome that GHS just have a bunch of videos of what their strings sound like.

I have .50 – .115 roundwound strings, and they sound fucking awesome even in BEAD.

The Flea Signature strings are still the same great Boomers Bass strings in his preferred gauges. Both are roundwound nickel plated steel that offers a big tone and long life.

o.o… John entwhistle!? use an example that plays your strings… not one that played Rotosound throughout his entire life.

I believe it’s cheating using a pre CBS precision bass for a string review… nobody else uses basses that sound that well o.O… it will obviously sound better than in a slightly normal bass :b… anyways… Rotosound is the classic roundwound string… they kind of invented it?

More durability in terms of string life?

Exactly my experience, and it seems many others also, the forums are choc full of people saying the same thing. GHS are a great company but this is unfortunately many peoples experience.

Have you tried the Boomers or Coated Boomers? A lot of bass players gravitate towards those as an all around string.

Boomers are good for all types of music and blend into the mix really well. If you are looking for a little more pop you might want to try the Progressives which are made out of a Filament Grade Alloy. They will feel a little smoother and will get picked up by the pick-ups a little better due to the magnetically active material.

Would Boomers be good for ’80′s “Hair Metal”,or would Super Steel series be better for that application? The problem with stainless steel type strings is that they will wear conventional Nickel Silver frets down real fast. Those who use stainless steel strings, usually have stainless steel frets either installed or that came stock with the guitar or bass. I’ve used Boomers for years, and will outlast other brands that I’ve tried.Thanks.

@lokisylym Mike is actually an Ernie Ball endorser, but Billie has been using our strings for years

@lokisylym Hey, these strings are great for all types of music including punk. The roundwound strings give them a nice percussive tone.

A little heavier gauge may help, but it has more to do with the materials and metals used.

what guage would be the best for a heavy dark tone?

#20
Written By nael abouelseoud on December 7th, 2012 @ 3:19 pm

flats would make a mellower tone and the sound a bit darker. You could also try the Pressurewound series if you wanted something that was mellow, but not completely flatwound.

i have an epiphone eb-0,i want to make its tone stronger, darker i have roundwounds on,if i put flats, would that get the job done?

It’s Crazy that our government is so TERRIFIED of people tripping. LSD is one of the SAFEST Experiences, if it’s PROPERLY made in a REAL Lab, (It is NOT easy to make CLEAN Triple filtered (99.9 %) Sandoz “Delysid” As a Chemist before Med School I can tell you way more problems are due to Alcohol and most other drugs. And badly made lsd should be Avoided. IT IS bad for you, more than likely. We are under the control of the thought police. Sucks!

There are some modern bands such as MGMT, Dumbo Gets Mad, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra that are trying to revive the psychedelic sound

There’s a decent amount of shrooms around, at least, but I can’t say they could ever measure up to acid.

I don’t know. I get really good lsd out of San Francisco from hippies and whatnot. I’m telling you, I mean it may be a lower dosage than it was back in the day, but it does its job well. I’ve experienced psychedelic beauty.

60s psychedelic’s my favorite but the psychedelic scene is still alive today even its very small, most of it being electronic music (not many bands playing it), a lot of it seems to be pretty good. on the other hand, this song -> amazing!

that guitarist has a wicked style of playing. I’m 20 and dont know anyone who likes this stuff, let alone even heard of this band. The psychedelic revival needs to come soon!

True, face it dude – LSDs reign is over. RCs that you can buy over the internet took over where it left off. I’m talking about novel PEAs/tryptamines/ergolines (the side effects of which are in many cases unknown). Sure LSD may be a lot safer than most of this designer stuff but what’re you gonna do. I stick to shrooms and DMT I wouldn’t buy acid unless I have personally witnessed the chemist cooking it otherwise I’d probably get some designer trip.

I think it’s more about what the listener’s mind adds/fills in when experiencing it that matters. Also, remeber, back when they released this, you couldn’t just come right out and write about this topic.

I really believe we are slowing our spiritual evolution, by making “Bass Strings” unavailablefor intelligent use. I wonder how many people know that the discovery of DNA was given a Bass Strings Boost. Some fascinating reading exists prior to 1966, if you can find it. I have always loved this song. It FEELS right !

I believe in using psychedelic drugs, but there’s definitely more to it than that. People look at it on the surface, while hippies are all about looking in deep. It’s all about extracting meaning and applying it to your life and personality.

I HIGHLY recommend using psychedelics when the opportunity comes up, but start out with the herb first. Cannabis is one piece of the puzzle, and psychedelics are the entire puzzle. I mean that in the most intense way possible.

great. the funny thing is that i also thought that i was the only one who new the word psychedelic, and the ideas of the hippies(i was right, they al think beiing hippie is all about drugs)

Real LSD is out there, trust me, 10 a hit. And it’s 100 times less toxic than Vitamin C.

Mushies are definitely just as good, though. Never pass up the chance to use them, they’re gifts from God.

I’m all about psychedelic music, and I’m 18. I first started getting into it my sophomore year, so I must have been 15 then. I totally feel you, though, dude. I felt like I was the only guy who knew the word “psychedelic”.

Psychedelic music will never die. Have you heard Animal Collective’s “Merriweather Post Pavilion”? Masterpiece. And there’s many people our age who’ve got their minds tuned in and are all about spreading the hippie vibes. Never give up, EVER! Peace!
