MOOG SOUND LAB: Phantogram, “16 years”

Phantogram came in to the Moog Sound Lab and re-imagined their unreleased song, “16 Years.” Vocalist/keyboardist Sarah Barthel sings hauntingly through an MF-104Z Analog Delay while playing not one, but two Moog synthesizers. Her left hand is in charge of the Minimoog Voyager Select Series providing big fat bass lines; the Little Phatty Stage II is arpeggiating in latch mode throughout the entire song. It is also being MIDI synced with the drum machine that percussionist Tim Oakley is performing on. In addition to the drum machine, Tim uses the Minimoog Voyager XL for a percussive sound. Meanwhile, guitarist/vocalist Josh Carter covers both the full sustain and the mute modes of the Moog Guitar. Going through an MF-104Z Analog Delay and the MF-102 Ring Modulator, Josh creates an ethereal backdrop with the tremolo arm of the Moog Guitar. Here’s my cover of Ewan Dobson’s tune Time 2. I’ve never really understod why he called it Time 2 until I started learning it my self. The tune is basically some sort of spin off of his other tune called Time. Or well, the bass tones are at least identical. I started learning this tune yesterday because a guy sent me a homemade tab of it, but it was unfortunately mostly wrong (except the intro) but it at least got me started working! The tune wasn’t really that hard, got it down in about 45 minutes. So if I am playing something wrong I’m blaming my lazyness of only practicing a day icon razz MOOG SOUND LAB: Phantogram, 16 years But I don’t think it’s any fatal error in it! Thanks for listening! @cwinget2580 Yeah, I wasn’t talking to you, but people in general that think it is a con. I just backed you up since other people earlier commented that it was a con!

Written By salomon9595 on January 30th, 2012 @ 11:40 am

@salomon9595 I don’t think his music is a con…next to Erik Mongrain Ewan is my favorite guitar player. I happen to love the song. It dosen’t have to be difficult to be a great song. I wasn’t trying to put Ewan down at all. I was addressing the people that say this song is a con.

Written By cwinget2580 on January 30th, 2012 @ 12:22 pm

can this be done without that kind o pick?? sweet styles

#32
Written By erinmvelasco on January 30th, 2012 @ 12:35 pm

@cwinget2580 Ewan’s music are not any ripoff of any kind and it would be sad if people though so since it takes lots and lots of practice to be able to play the way he does. But this tune is, in my opinion, hugely overrated for some reason (I like his other stuff more) and you are clearly able to hear that he’s using a delay pedal. And that is the way this song gets it’s sound. If you think that is a con, you’re either extremely stupid and brain-dead or you’re trolling.

Ok if all his music is just a con then why is he signed eith candyrat along with Antoine Dufour and Mckee

@GeorgeAAinswibble Congratulations, you have revealed the great secret which nobody was trying to hide. In fact in many of the videos of Ewan Dobson playing this song live, you see him playing a short set of intro chords specifically to show the effect of the delay that he uses. Quite a con that is.

It has been about four hours since you commented, plenty of time to learn such a simple half-hour song, and yet I don’t see a demonstration video in your uploads yet.

Written By Stetrain on January 30th, 2012 @ 2:26 pm

at the end of the day, this is all a big cheat. Absolutely anyone can play this. If you dream of playing it, dream no longer. The delay effect makes it sound like you’re playing twice as fast as you actually are. In this original video he only uses downstrokes. When combined with the delay effect, this creates the illusion of fast alternate picking. This song is a complete con and if you really want to be able to play this song, you could probably learn it perfectly in half an hour.
