Dunlop Strings is proud to partner with world renowned guitar expert Gary Brawer in the production of our new series RESTRING: WITH GARY BRAWER. In these very straightforward videos, Gary gives you the skills you will need to take charge of your guitar, save some money, and change your own strings. He shares wisdom he has gained over the years about string changing and specific guitar styles. Most importantly, both Gary and Dunlop want you to have the confidence to change your own strings so that you can quickly replace a broken string, or replace a dead set with a fresh one. With this knowledge you will be one step closer to reaching your full musical potential. Gary has been a long time friend of the Dunlop family and also shares his home turf with the organization. For those who aren’t aware, Gary has a guitar shop in San Francisco and has been doing set-up an repairs for a multitude of top-shelf guitar players such as Jerry Garcia, Santana, Slash, The Rolling Stones, Metallica, Johnny Winter, Zakk Wylde, Warren Haynes, Jim Dunlop, Muddy Waters, Jeff Beck, Aerosmith… You get the picture. www.jimdunlop.com www.brawer.com Produced & Directed by Joey Tosi Featuring Gary Brawer Executive Producer is Jimmy Dunlop Art Direction by Graham Shaw Sound Engineering & Edited by Max Baloian Musical Direction by Bryan Kehoe Cinematography by Jim Granato

Well, of course I had to cut the strings off just a little too short (first time me restringing a bass)… two strings of my new Dean Markley set straight to the trash bin. I hate it!!

I was under the impression you had to have as little a break angle as possible, so you don’t have each successive wind of the string above the last.

I tried restrining my rickenbacker 4001C64 and Im not sure if I cut too much off but the strings are too tight on the neck… do you know what would be the problem?

I don’t know whether to buy this RI 62 American vintage bass OR the American Deluxe Jazz Bass 5-string?!?!?!? This thing looks too beautiful….I keep dreaming about it…..But that low B string is something I crave for……Then again maybe 5 strings are all hype anyways….SOMEONE HELP…..

It says 9/59 and that has to be the date the neck, at least, was made. If they sold them as 60′s I’m sure they had to make them up first before they sent them out. That’s only three months ahead.

I didn’t think there was such a thing as a 59′ Jazz. Don’t you mean 9-60?? Check out the video I posted of my candy red 60′ Jazz. It’s a 9-60 neck date and is all original. It’s incredible.

I have an original Jazz bass and it has 9/59 on the neck. I still play it and it sounds better than my Anniversary model USA made bass. These basses are worth a lot of money and I don’t know if there are many still played today. I’m recording a CD with mine and the recording engineer chose the 60 over the 06. It just has a great sound and mine is married to an Ampeg SVT with two 8-10 bottoms. You just have to hear it and play it.

I had a model like this, but didn’t like it – the extreme neck taper was annoying, & the tone was a little light — I wanted a deep P-bass tone at the time, that was cooler than the twang of the Jazz. Even stripped off the sunburst & stained it cherry-wood tone, that was a popular look too, sort of instant weathering – then I dropped out of school & pawned it : P If you have it (there’s a deep ding on the bottom edge & a scar on the face where I sanded too hard) I hope you’re enjoying it

Please, roll down the gain on the amp… bass sound so distorted(

Nice instrument but I get a sick feeling when someone starts bending round wound strings on fragile vintage frets. This is a NEW BASS, NO??

#33
Written By 55mrj on December 30th, 2012 @ 1:27 am

You know, I disagree about the general preferance of taking the covers off a vintage bass. I have a few 1960s fenders and I prefer to play with covers on. I do play with my fingers tho…

love to see that new original bridge and as a matter of priority get those covers off of there!!
LOOKING NICE and playability are far removed.
