This is why I choose a 5 string over a 4 string.

do you have any issues with the wider neck?
i have been playing bass for over a year, and maybe sometime in the next year or two i was thinking of upgrading to a musicman 5 string, or maybe a 5 string bc rich zombie
your help would be much appreciated in this!
also, i should be uploading bass covers after christmas, and your videos have been pretty helpful to me, so it would mean a lot if you subbed me, or even watched some of my videos, and dropped a like (when i upload them, obviously!)
=)

The main reason why i got into 5 strings was primarily because i hated using the open e string i love have an e on the 5th ii still love using f on the the first fret but i also like having it right in te middle of the action where i realized i spent most of tyme playing anyway!!

I got a 5 string Johnson bass and I can tell ya it has way better tone than my previous 4 string bass guitars.

I’ve got a 4 string bass with a B string on it and i removed the G string. Who needs the high G string anyways when you can have a Low B string!

See you have to tune, extensions like in coding! I wouldn’t even touch that bass. It’s like be slapped by a ghost.

Four string is cleaner! The more stringed it’s,more tuning is needed etc…Chaos theory is fully just not believed.Hence war lives on.People are image thieves straight up.

For different tunings? No. For “overall tone”? No. For extended range? Bingo! I play a lot of chords, for which the high G and 22+ frets are indispensable, but I love having the earthquake low to make people shit themselves! The one downside, is the cost and availability of strings. Really bullshit! I must say, it’s very wrong to say that 5 string basses “are much more well built”. Shit comes in all shapes and sizes! ;) (Harley Benton make a few 6 string basses!)

exactly sometimes its nice to have the sound ‘expand’ as the guitar chord go up to the note but the bass decends

A 5 string is awesome.. but not an LTD/ESP. Get an ibanez.

I’m using a 5-string bass regularly, and I’m barely using the thickest string though, because we rarely play any songs that would go deeper than drop C, and I prefer to learn songs the way the artist meant to play them, so if he played it in a drop C tuning on a four string, I would do the same, ignoring my fifth string. I’m actually thinking of getting a four string now, when I’m upgrading to a better bass. I’m not seeing myself writing music that would use the deeper Bs and As.

At first I was very hesitant to switching to a 5 string because I didn’t believe it was truly necessary for anything other than heavy music.but since buying a 5 string,I’ve come to the realization of how wrong I was. The B string adds so much more range to what I can do that it still astounds me. I am actually considering switching to a 6 string for more high end range

Yeah, gotta say I played a 5 at my local music shop yesterday. It was pretty comfortable but the 5th string is rather useless for me. I tested it on an Ampeg 6×10 cabinet with a head which name I can’t remember and with Hiwatt B100 15. The B string’s frequency was to low to be well audible even though I picked it very close to the bridge. I could barely hear any sound change when changing frets. I’ll stick to 4.

I’ve watched videos of guys with pretty tiny hands playing 5 string basses. Hell I got tiny hands and after seeing that I just bought myself one up. I think the trick more so is getting your hand to be able to stay in fluid motion and your fingers limber on your fretting hand. I play guitar usually and I’ve been learning some Police songs that are making me stretch my hands in ways I never thought possible lol.

And I need a thiner neck because I’ve got pretty short fingers. That’s why switching to 5 would be very unlikely for me.

all you really needed to say was “it’s a lower string. it’s bass. BASS”

after almost two years I went from a 4 string to a 6 string because I was always playing my four string using almost two octaves of range, that’s just me though

From the base of my hand to the tip of my ring (“bird”) finger is 7.5 inches, so comfort is a real factor for me. Though I really enjoy the Ibanez four-string necks, but the 5-bangers are VELVET…….

but if you retuned to drop d on a 4 you have to relearn everything problem number 1. problem number 2 adding the fifth string adds 10 dollars to any set of strings you purchase. so unless you’re playing drop c or lower stick with the four.

I made the transition from 4 to 5 no problem, but now I’ve got a 6 string and I’m finding the learning curve pretty steep.
